Tooth Extraction Knightdale NCTooth extractions are a common occurrence in today’s modern dental practices. An extraction may be necessary when patients have suffered a trauma or if they have failed to perform adequate preventative oral health practices such as flossing and brushing. Whether tooth loss is caused by an extraction, trauma, or lack of brushing and flossing it can make patients nervous and worried about their appearance. The technical term for an extraction is exodontia. Those patients suffering from periodontal disease may need multiple tooth extractions to remove the severely damaged or decayed teeth in order to perform other restorative dental practices. Wisdom teeth are often considered the most likely to be extracted. Patients should come to Stansell Dentistry Associates at our Knightdale office for an assessment so we can determine if they are in need of an extraction. Once the patient has been evaluated, we can recommend appropriate action and schedule an appointment. We are waiting to help you and your dental needs. What Are the Different Types of Extraction?By definition, an extraction involves removing a tooth from the surrounding gum tissue which supports the tooth as well as the roots embedded in the jawbone. There are two main types of tooth extraction. Each one is used for different reasons and different circumstances. A simple extraction involves the use of a solution to numb both the tooth and the gum of the tooth in need of extraction. The patient will not feel any pain during the procedure, just a steady pressure. This pressure is used to then work the tooth loose and finally pull it free from the mouth. The other type of extraction is called a surgical extraction and though it is more complicated, it too uses a numbing agent so the patient can be comfortable during the procedure. In some cases, sedation dentistry will be employed by using a general anesthetic to make sure the patient will not move during the procedure. This procedure is used for those cases where the teeth are deeply entrenched in the jawbone. This is indicative of teeth which failed to erupt fully through the gums. Extractions and Restorative DentistryWhen extractions were first performed, they were crude and done in unsanitary settings in which patients frequently incurred infections and sometimes even died. Thankfully, those days are behind us. Streamlined and modified, the procedure is simple and quick with virtually no chance of infection. While extractions are typically done in order to prevent further decay or disease in the mouth, they can be done for the purpose of restoring the patient’s smile by making room for dental implants. Sometimes tooth extractions are required if a tooth has suffered too much damage for a dental filling or dental crown. During recovery, patients should limit their physical activity and rest with their head raised at an angle. This will help keep swelling to a minimum. It is recommended patients take anti-inflammatory medication to also help with the swelling. Extractions can be traumatic, driving patient anxiety high.
