Dental Implants vs. Dental Bridges in Raleigh, NC

Older Black couple smiling after making a dental implant and dental bridge appointment at Stansell Dentistry Associates Losing teeth is a major issue, even if you only lose one and it is out of sight when you smile. However, many people think that losing just one tooth is not that big of a deal. However, even a single missing tooth can have a significant impact on your oral health and your quality of life. A missing tooth affects your ability to bite and chew. Food can get stuck in the empty space where your tooth once was. Your digestion is affected. Your speech suffers. In addition to these issues, your jawbone begins to weaken, causing your healthy teeth to shift out of natural alignment into the gap. Replacing that missing tooth is crucial for restoring the functions of your mouth, your oral health, and your quality of life. At Stansell Dentistry Associates, we can help you to determine the best option to meet your specific tooth replacement needs.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a traditional restoration used for replacing a missing tooth. It can replace up to three consecutive missing teeth. There are a few different types of bridges, with a fixed bridge being the most common. This restoration is a whole unit, typically made of porcelain or ceramic, that consists of the replacement tooth set between two crowns. The replacement tooth is called a pontic tooth. The crowns are set over your adjacent healthy teeth, referred to as abutment teeth. The crowns anchor the bridge securely into place.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Bridge

Advantages of bridges include:
•  You can eat and speak normally again.
•  Your digestion is improved.
•  You regain your confident, beautiful smile.
•  Your oral health is improved.
•  The bridge prevents your adjacent teeth from shifting out of alignment.

Disadvantages of a bridge include:
•  Some of the enamel from each abutment tooth needs to be removed to create sufficient space.
•  Your abutment teeth support the bridge, which can be uncomfortable.
•  The bridge cannot stop bone loss in your jaw.
•  You may need to have your bridge replaced periodically to accommodate a changing jawbone.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are an alternative treatment for replacing missing teeth and have been in use since the 1960’s. This treatment uses small titanium posts to support ceramic crowns. The posts are surgically implanted into your jawbone. While you heal, your bone fuses to the posts, a process called osseointegration. The posts become strong, secure roots onto which your crowns are inserted into place. Dental implants can be used to replace any number of teeth, from one to all of them. We can customize your treatment to meet your specific needs.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer numerous advantages:
•  They look just like your natural teeth.
•  They feel and function just like real teeth.
•  They are much more comfortable. Your teeth are supported by the posts, rather than your adjacent teeth.
•  Your adjacent teeth do not need to be altered in any way.
•  The posts stimulate your jawbone just like the roots of your natural teeth. This stops and prevents bone loss in your jaw.

There are also a few disadvantages to dental implants as well:
•  You need to undergo a surgical procedure.
•  Recovery can last several weeks to several months.
•  If you do not have enough bone mass in your jaw, you may need a bone graft first.
•  Implants are often more expensive.

If you are missing even just one tooth, it is important that you have it replaced, even if you cannot see the space when you smile. Call Stansell Dentistry Associates today at 984-477-0177 to schedule your consultation and find out if implants or a dental bridge is the best option for you.
