How To Properly Care For Your New Nightguard

How To Properly Care For Your New NightguardWhen it comes to safeguarding your teeth against the harsh effects brought about by clenching and grinding, nightguards provide a valuable tool. After you have received your custom-fitting nightguard, it is your responsibility to care for it properly to continue protecting the teeth for the longest time possible. Here, we provide valuable tips to help achieve this goal and keep your oral health in its best form.

Rinse Immediately after Wearing

Your nightguard rests in the mouth for many hours during the time you are asleep. It is, therefore, exposed to bacterial plaque and even food leftovers. Each time you remove it, it makes sense to rinse it properly using warm water, and not hot water since it could deform it. Rinsing the piece helps wash down any plaque and debris stuck on it.

Brush the Piece with a Toothbrush

Give the nightguard a light but thorough brushing using your normal toothbrush. Again, you don't have to apply any toothpaste while brushing the nightguard. Toothpastes can be abrasive, as such, they may scratch the piece, causing it to start wearing out prematurely. Instead, you can use dish soap because it is non-abrasive.

Deep Clean the Piece Monthly

It's crucial that you deep clean the nightguard once a month. Use an OTC nonabrasive denture cleaner. A mixture of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar can also work well. Make sure you soak the piece in distilled white vinegar for half an hour. After soaking, you can now rinse it. Next, soak the guard in hydrogen peroxide for another 30 minutes. After you are done, rinse it again, then let it dry completely.

Don't ever let the nightguard soak in any solution for more than an hour. It can damage the material. Also, avoid soaking in any liquid that has alcohol, including Listerine. Remember to store it safely in a clean case when not in use. Contact us to get a mouth nightguard to protect your pearly whites from grinding and clenching!
